Fieldcrest Ideal is named 2010 Cow of the Year

Voting has concluded for the 2010 Cow of the Year contest, and the winner with 43% of ballots cast is Fieldcrest Ideal EX-92-3E.  She was bred by the Haggetts of Fieldcrest Farm in Addison, Ontario and is owned by Fred and Margaret Barrett and family of Oceanbrae Farms, Miscouche, Prince Edward Island.

“Ideal” has been a fixture at or near the top of the LPI list for several years, combining top type scores with high production.  She has produced over 50,000 kgs of milk in 5 completed lactations and is currently projected for over 11,000 kgs of milk again in her 6th lactation.  “Ideal” is also polled, and as such is garnering some added attention.  She and her polled “Logic” daughter are in a flush program at Oceanbrae at the moment, while her “Peri’s Champ” daughter is also in a flush program in the USA after being purchased by a syndicate in the 2008 National Sale.

All four nominees in the 2010 Cow of the Year contest received multiple votes, demonstrating the depth of quality in the contest.  The other nominated cows were:

Lynmark Clay Equity EX-90, bred by Lynmark Farms of Norwood, ON and owned by Prinsville Dairy Farms of Bloomfield, ON.  She is a past Junior Champion at the Canadian National Show and was also Reserve Grand Champion of the 2006 National Show.

Quality Ina VG-87, bred by Bryce Cumming of Williamstown, ON and owned by Ferme Serol Enr of Roxton Falls, QC.  She was the Hon. Mention Grand Champion at the 2009 National Show and has proven to be a strong producer in her own right, with BCAs in second lactation of 309-284-333.

Headacher Logic Doris VG-86, bred and owned by Jenna Kippen of Schomberg, ON.  She was the Grand Champion of the 2009 National Show at only two years of age, and was Reserve All American in 2008 after placing second in her heifer class at the World Dairy Expo.

Congratulations to all who bred and owned cattle nominated for Cow of the Year in 2010!  Be sure to get your special cows photographed this year so they can be entered for Cow of the Year in 2011!
